What Not to Include in Your Resume

Your resume is your first impression on a potential employer. Resumes are limited to 1-2 pages, so you must ensure you are only including important information that is relevant to the job you are applying for. The following are some things that you can leave off your resume:

1. Full Mailing Address

There is no need to have your full mailing address on your resume. Not only can this be a security concern it is also unnecessary at this stage of the hiring process. You can include your city and province to show that you are a local candidate.

2. Photo

Your resume does not need to include a picture of yourself. The employer should consider your resume solely based on your qualifications and a photo can sometimes lead to discrimination. Unless your profession requires a photo, like a tv celebrity, you do not need to include a photo.

3. References

At this point in the application process, there is no need to include a list of references. You also do not need to include the line “References available upon request”. Once you move forward in the application process the employer will ask you for a list of references if they need them.

4. Hobbies and Interests

Since resume space is so limited there is no need to include your hobbies and interests unless they are directly relevant to the job. Instead, use the extra space to include more professional experience.

5. Too Much Personal Information

Your resume should not include personal details such as your birthday, family situation, religious beliefs, etc. This information is not relevant to a job application and therefore does not need to be included in the resume as it can lead to discrimination.

6. Personal Pronouns

You do not need to use words like I, we, me, etc. Instead, start statements with action words like “directed” or “analyzed” these are more engaging for the reader and don’t waste space. The employer knows you are referencing yourself.

7. Irrelevant Experience

Every sentence in your resume counts so to show them why you are qualified for the position leave off any experience that is not relevant to the position you are applying for. Also, do not include any skills that are irrelevant to the position.

8. Outdated or Unprofessional Contact Information

Have a professional email address for employers. Ensure all contact information is up to date so the employer can easily get in touch with you. Also, do not include any non-business social media links; a LinkedIn profile or professional portfolio is fine.

On average a hiring manager spends about 30 seconds looking at a resume, so you want to make sure you grab their attention. Look over your resume to see if there are any areas for improvement. Not sure if your resume is alright? Contact our professional resume writers for a free review today!
